The Alexandra Gogos were treated to a special day of pampering thanks to a caring community.
The idea came from Diana Teffo, the director and social worker in charge of the Alex AIDS Orphan Project, who not only cares for the needs of the orphaned children but is ever aware of the stress, tragedy and stigma that is faced by the aging grandmothers.
With that in mind Diana approached Deloitte Consulting to request some small recognition of their 'mothering' role to their orphaned grandchildren. To her amazement, company staff devoted an afternoon to pampering the women themselves.

“Little did we know that each accountant would give up their time and money and come to Alex to spend the afternoon with Gogos,” says Diana. “They organized the pampering session of hand massages and manicures, provided meals and presented each granny with a bunch of fresh flowers to take home. It was just what the Gogos needed, they felt so good and revived.”
Brooke Gibson, one of the Wakefield Grannies, was touched by the photos. “These wonderful women who have been through so many troubles and so much heartbreak are poised and dignified as they sit looking for all the world like they are off to a wedding,” says Brooke. “There is little doubt that this occasion will long be remembered by the Gogos, and by us too witnessing the serene acceptance of their lives while decked out in such finery. What a beautiful sight.
